Patterns of Writing - Narration:

1. Narration of Event
The writer tells a story.  The event is recorded to make a certain point.

Here are four stages that appear in a story:

Disturbance—the actions or complications that set up the conflict.  “An inciting event creates a disturbance that causes the action to move forward and become complicated” (Polnac 165).

Conflict—Where is the problem or struggle in the story?  Conflict provides interest, suspense, and tension.

Crisis—Where is the most exciting or important moment in the story?  The crisis is the turning point; it is where the conflict comes to a head.

Resolution—How is the conflict resolved?

2. Narration of Process
The writer describes the steps for

How to do something.
-how to study
-how to overcome procrastination
-how to change your oil
-how to discipline your child
-how to take notes
-how to make chicken-fried steak
-how to dance the two-step

How something is done.
-how the TxTag works
-how the kidneys work
-how solar power works
-how the brain works
-how airplanes fly
-how an engine works
-how a refrigerator works

3. Cause and Effect

Cause asks, “WHY did X happen?”

Effect asks, “WHAT are the results or consequences?”

I forgot to fill the gas tank yesterday. My car broke down on the way to school.

I didn’t study for my history test.  I scored a 45 on the test.  I might need to drop the course.
