Grip Stick

A foam apple on a string, and a couple of wood poles, each with a shorter pole attached perpendicularly at the end as a handle.
Can you handle the leverage?

The concept of leverage is central to many tools people commonly use: crowbars, wrenches, scissors, and more. Try hanging the same weight at different distances from the handle, and see how much more force you have to exert on the handle to keep the stick horizontal!

Materials

  • long dowel (102 cm or 52 cm length, diameter 1.75 cm, 5/8 in)
  • short dowel (30 cm length, diameter 3cm, 1 1/8 in)
  • Hooks (3 to 5)
  • Weight on string (1 Newton foam apple for example)

Construction Instructions

Drill 5/8 in hole in center, mount long dowel in it with wood glue.

screw in at center of short dowel, and every 25 cm along long dowel from there.

attach string to weight with 5 in (12 cm) loop
