About Webmasters

What's a Webmaster?

There is not yet any common agreement on just what a "webmaster" is. It can be described as any or all of the following:

System administrator
For some, a webmaster is the person who runs the web server, installs and configures the web server software, manages usage and security, and installs other applications such as chat rooms and multimedia.
Application programmer
For others, a webmaster is a person who also writes programs in Perl, JavaScript, C++, or Java that enable interaction and data processing on the website.
Technical communicator
An essential skill for webmasters is the ability to communicate effectively to specific audiences using words, color, images, audio, and video.
Graphic & media design specialist
For still others, the webmaster conceptualizes the overall logic and design of the site, designs the web pages, creates graphics and other media, and in general works with the client to achieve that person's business, organizational, professional, or commercial requirements for the website.

The Webmaster Certificate Program at Austin Community College provides courses in all of these areas to enable you be the kind of webmaster you want to be. The program offers two specialization - one in system and application programming and the other in design and media. Your Webmaster Certificate will indicate your specialization in one of these areas.

We've provided links to general information about webmasters, training, certificate programs, salaries, and jobs. If you know of useful online information about webmasters, contact Marcela Nouzovska, Webmaster Program coordinator, at mnouzovs@austincc.edu or (512) 223-7588.
