Psychology

Psychology digs deep into human and animal behavior and mental processes

Psychologists study the behavior and mental processes of humans and all other animals, including healthy and abnormal brain functions and the brain’s role in language development, thinking skills and physical movement. Psychology also examines social, cross-cultural, and gender perspectives. Psychology majors will examine questions about the basis for compassion, the connections between the brain and the mind, or the causes of emotional and psychological suffering. Students majoring in psychology typically follow the pathway through the Psychology Program at Austin Community College, then transfer to a bachelor’s degree program at a four-year institution.

Career Information

Although the most common career goal of most undergraduate psychology students is to become a psychologist or counselor, there are many career paths a student can pursue with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. However, it should be noted that the amount of direct client contact is limited for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Many students who graduate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology enter the workforce as specialists or technicians in human and social services, or education.
